MyPure™ – 100% Organic Mushroom Extract
Most “mushroom” supplements are actually mycelia grown on grain. They contain only fractions of the nutrients found in real mushrooms, and are up to 70% starch.
MyPure™ Mushrooms are just that. Pure, NonGMO, 100% Certified Organic Mushroom fruiting bodies with assured levels of Beta- (1,3) (1,6) D-glucans.

Mushrooms or Mycelium?
For thousands of years, Traditional Chinese, Tibetan, Korean, Japanese and other holistic health systems have seen certain species of mushrooms as some of the world’s most profound health builders.
Today, studies are proving them right, showing that mushrooms support immunity and healthy cholesterol levels, protect cellular structure, encourage nerve growth, promote brain function and serve as tonics to virtually every major organ system.
These benefits are due to the nutrients mushrooms contain. The most prominent of these are Beta-(1,3)(1,6) G-glucans, but ergothioneines, antioxidants, ergosterol, anti-inflammatory sterols, lipids, glycosides, chitins, diterpenes and triterpenes are also important.
Real mushrooms are the “fruits” of organisms called basidiomycetes. These organisms have other parts, like mycelia, which are like their “roots.” Just as a grape is different from the vine it grows on, mushrooms differ from mycelia. Because they have different nutritional profiles, their benefits differ, as well.
For many years, most supplements sold as “mushrooms” in the United States have actually been mycelia. This confusion occurred because manufacturers of supplements were not required to disclose the parts of an organism their product contained.
In 2010, regulations changed. By now, most companies do list (in the Supplement Facts Box of the label) whether their product contains mushrooms or mycelia. However, many mycelia products still contain beautiful mushroom pictures on their front panels.
American mycelia grows in plastic bags filled with rice, corn, wheat or rye. As it grows, it becomes part of the grain. Because there is no way to separate it at harvest, it ends up being up to 70% grain.
So, Which is Better?
As mentioned, real mushrooms contain high levels (20% to 55%) of immune enhancing nutrients called Beta- (1,3) (1,6) D-glucans and less than 2% common starch. Mycelia usually contain less than 7% beta glucans, but 40% to 70% starch. Starch, of course, provides none of the benefits for which mushrooms are prized.
As mentioned above, the benefits that mushrooms confer are due to their nutrients. Mycelia contain far fewer of them. Logic thereby makes mushrooms the clear choice.
The table below shows the results of laboratory analyses that measure levels of beta glucans and starch from samples of several species of real mushrooms and the same species of mycelia. These analyses are striking evidence of the superiority of real mushrooms.
|Product Tested||% Beta D-Glucans||% Starch|
|Cordyceps: Mushroom Fruiting Body||34.36%||1.65%|
|Cordyceps: Myceliated Grain||1.50%||64%|
|Lion’s Mane: Mushroom Fruiting Body||37.4%||1.9%|
|Lion’s Mane: Myceliated Grain||1.1%||63.5%|
|Maitake: Mushroom Fruiting Body||32.4%||0.7%|
|Maitake: Myceliated Grain||6.38%||44.47%|
|Reishi: Mushroom Fruiting Body||53.20%||0.5%|
|Reishi: Myceliated Grain||1.06%||45.2%|
How Do I Know What I’m Buying?
Most mycelium products now list their ingredients as “mycelium,” “mycelia,” “myceliated rice,” “myceliated grain,” etc. Others may be slightly less straightforward, saying they contain “mycelium and fruiting bodies,” “full spectrum” or “full life cycle.” All of these indicate that at least most of a product is mycelia grown on grain.
What you want to see is “100% mushroom extract” or “100% mushroom fruiting body extract.” If a company has labeled its product honestly, this will assure that you have a real mushroom product and that its nutrients are as bioavailable as possible. Simple mushroom powders (not extracts) contain all the nutrients found in extracts, but are less bioavailable because the mushroom cell wall is not broken down.
If you want to be completely certain about what a “mushroom” supplement contains, you can conduct this simple test at home:
- Combine one gram of product (2 emptied capsules of 500 mg each or one half teaspoon of powder) with three tablespoons of water.
- Mix thoroughly to dissolve the powder as completely as possible.
- Add 10 drops of standard iodine tincture (available at nearly any pharmacy).
MyPure™ Mushrooms, from Pure Essence, are Non GMO, 100% Certified Organic Whole Mushroom Fruiting Body Extracts, and nothing else. They contain guaranteed levels of beta glucans and are rich in other factors that only whole mushrooms provide. Every lot is lab tested for identity, purity, potency, heavy metals and pesticides.
They are 100% compliant with California’s Proposition 65.
MyPure™ Mushrooms are made in cGMP compliant facilities and meet even the most exacting regulatory standards. They contain no fillers, binders, flavorings, colorings or common allergens of any kind. They are 100% pure mushroom extracts. Nothing more, nothing less.
Our original products use only 1:1 hot water extracts. These provide maximum Beta- (1,3) (1,6) -D-glucan content. Our 4X formulas combine 1:1 hot water extracts with stronger extracts (4:1, 8:1, 10:1, depending on the mushroom species).
These stronger extracts also provide high levels of Beta-glucans but offer richer concentrations of ganoderic acids, cordycepin, diterpenes and other important nutrients.
The common recommendation for mushrooms is 500 to 5000 mg per day. The low end is for those who use mushrooms to maintain general wellbeing. If this is you, our original MyPure™ Mushroom formulas are perfect for you. (Note: Because real mushrooms are richer in the vital nutrients you want from mushrooms, one capsule of MyPure™ Mushrooms can replace from two to six capsules of mycelial products).
The higher end of the usage range is for those who want maximum mushroom benefits. If you belong to this group, we suggest our MyPure™ 4X products. Each capsule of these formulas provides the equivalent of 2250 to 2400 mg of mushroom nutrition. (Note: Each capsule of our 4X formulas provides the equivalent of up to 8 to 24 mycelium capsules.)
No matter which formula you choose, you can be sure you’re getting the cleanest, purest real mushroom nutrition available anywhere.
